Musical Movies


 

Musicals are a movie genre in which several songs sung by the characters are linked into the story line. The songs are used to advance the plot or develop the movie’s characters. There are several sub-genres of musical movies. Among them are Animated, Dance and romance comedy . 

 

 

An example of an Animated Musiacal Film is Nightmare before Christmas (1993), directed by Henry Selick and produced and conceived by Tim Burton.The story is about holidays such as Halloween and Christmas. When speaking of  holiday movies, many people think of this movie, which won a Golden Globe Award. The most famous song is This is Halloween . 

 


 

An example of a Dance Film is Swing Kids (2018), directed by Kang Hyeong-Cheol and based on the Korean musical by Roh Ki-sooThe story takes place in Geoje prison camp during the Korean War in1951. One day Jackson (American army soldier) is ordered by a superior officer into a tapdancing team from the POW camp. Soon, the “Swing Kids” are formed.  The movie won many awards in Korea. 

 

 

 

An example of a Romance comedy Musical Film is Mamma Mia! (2008), directed by Phyllida Lloyd. The film is based on songs of the pop group ABBA. The story takes place on a Greek island. The main character is Sophie, who dreams of a white wedding, with her father. But she doesn't know her father, so she is looking for him. The movie won many awards. The most famous song is “Dancing Queen” .
